What a Corporate Magician Actually Does at a Company Event

Most people booking a corporate magician for the first time have one honest worry: that a magician belongs at a child's birthday party, not in a room full of executives holding cocktails.

Fair worry. The two jobs share a name and almost nothing else. Here is what a corporate magician actually does for the ninety minutes you hire him, based on sixteen years of company events across Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra Beach, and St. Augustine.

He works the room, not a stage

The format most corporate events need is strolling close-up magic, also called walk-around magic. The magician moves through the room performing for four or five people at a time, with the magic happening in their hands rather than on a platform twenty feet away.

Nothing stops. Nobody has to sit down. The bar stays open and conversation keeps running. A group finishes watching, the magician moves on, and that group spends the next ten minutes arguing about what they just saw.

What it actually does for the room

Companies do not book entertainment because they want a show. They book it because they have a room problem.

Guests from different departments who have never spoken stand in their own clusters. New hires hover near the wall. The client your VP wanted to introduce is trapped in a conversation about parking. Nobody mingles at a mingling event, because mingling requires a reason to talk to a stranger.

Close-up magic manufactures that reason. Six strangers watch something impossible happen a foot from their faces, and now they have something to say to each other. That is the actual product. The magic is the delivery method.

What he needs from your venue

Nothing. That is not a figure of speech.

No stage. No sound system. No microphone. No lighting rig. No seating chart. No power outlet. A strolling magician walks in with everything in his pockets and a table he brings himself, and the room needs no modification of any kind. For an event planner already negotiating with a venue over AV costs, that matters more than the magic does.

Where it fits in your run of show

Two windows do the most work at a company event. The first is arrival, when guests trickle in and the room has not filled yet, which is the most awkward stretch of any evening. The second comes after dinner, when plates clear and energy dips before the program restarts.

A magician placed in either window earns his fee. Placed during a keynote or an awards presentation, he competes with your own program, which serves nobody.

How to tell a corporate magician from a children's entertainer

Plenty of performers list both on the same website. A few questions separate them fast:

  1. Which companies have booked you, and can you name them?

  2. Do you carry liability insurance, and can you send a certificate?

  3. How do you handle a room where the show is not the main focus?

  4. What happens if our guest count doubles?

A corporate magician answers all four without hesitating, because he has been asked all four before.

What a corporate magician costs

In the Jacksonville market, expect to start around $1,075 for 90 minutes of strolling magic covering up to 200 guests, and about $1,375 for two hours. Events above 200 guests price separately, starting near $2,000 for two hours and $2,600 for three.

Those are starting figures, quoted individually. A quote that comes in dramatically below them usually means a hobbyist without insurance, and the certificate question at the top of that list will tell you quickly.
